The leadership conversation nobody wants to have — but everyone needs.
Most leadership conversations start in the wrong place.
They talk about strategy. Influence. Communication. Vision.
All important. All necessary.
But none of them work if the person doing the leading hasn’t done the hardest work of all: leading themselves.
I’ve worked with executives, entrepreneurs, military leaders, and educators across 30 countries. And in 40+ years, I’ve never met a truly great leader who hadn’t first done serious inner work.
What ‘Leading Yourself’ Actually Looks Like
It means knowing your values so clearly that you make decisions from them — not just from pressure or convenience.
It means understanding your emotional triggers before they ambush you in a board meeting or a difficult conversation.
It means knowing the difference between who you are and who you think you’re supposed to be.
This isn’t therapy. It’s leadership preparation. The most important kind.
“The quality of your leadership will never exceed the quality of your relationship with yourself.”
Three Questions Worth Sitting With
I want to leave you with three questions. Not to answer quickly — but to actually sit with.
1. What are the three core values that genuinely drive your decisions right now? (Not the ones on your company wall — the real ones.)
2. What is one pattern in how you lead that you know, deep down, isn’t serving the people around you?
3. When was the last time you invested in yourself — not your skills, but you — as a person and as a leader?
These questions are the beginning of the work. The work that makes every other leadership investment pay off.
